Johannesburg Nightlife

Johannesburg by Night

When in Johannesburg don't miss out on

  • The Montecasino complex in Fourways is like a miniature town. This Tuscan styled centre boasts a casino, about two dozen eateries, cabaret venues, a brilliant theatre, interesting shops and a cinema complex.
  • Johannesburg has a number of "villages" -  places where people choose to go and play at night. Melville for example, is Little Hollywood - home to local celebrities, musicians and creative souls. Outdoor cafes, funky bookshops, serious restaurants, music venues and vendors with craftwork all vie for your attention. Another such "village" is Norwood, which is a cosmopolitan spot with eateries ranging from Jewish to Japanese with Indian and Italian in between.
  • Rosebank has become the heart of Johannesburg thanks to its craft markets, choice restaurants, movie houses showing international releases from all over the world and up-market, trendy shops.
  • Parkhurst's 4th Avenue is the ideal place to meet at sunset. Pavements are packed out with diners, only the sleekest of cars roar past, antique and decor shops dot the area and you can eat anything from pizza to duck with a ginger shallot confit.
  • Caesar's near the airport is based on the famous Caesar's hotel in Las Vegas and offers gambling, dancing girls and cabarets shows all under one roof.
  • Chinatown, Johannesburg is situated in Cyrildene to the east of the city.  It takes up a single street and is easy to explore. A bakery, butchery and pharmacy intersperse the many wholesalers and restaurants that line the street. The crab, calamari, duck and noodle dishes are delicious and prices more than reasonable.
  • Sandton Square, recently renamed Nelson Mandela Square, is a hive of up-market restaurants that all face the Square with its massive sculpture of the famous man and the lovely fountains that keep things cool in the summer. Similarly, restaurants are grouped together at Melrose Arch not far away, the most famous of which is Moyo's, an up-market African eatery with live music, face-painting and authentic pan-African food on offer. Next door is the Meat Co. famous for its superior quality steaks and selection of red wines.
  • Newtown Precinct is an unrivalled cultural melting pot. The area boasts a vibrant nightlife consisting of bars, African restaurants, museums, live music venues, the Market theatre.and so much more. If there is one spot that should be compulsory on every Johannesburg visitor's itinerary it's Newtown.
  • Soweto boasts a vibrant nightlife and there are a number of accredited tour operators that specialise in shebeen and tavern hopping tours. Soweto also has a few choice restaurants that offer an authentic African vibe and delicous local cuisine.
